Major cleanup of the computer

G-Data calls for spring cleaning
With the dawn of spring is also high time to computers from unnecessary data and outdated software. Outdated programs take up memory, which relevant issues could be used. Moreover, they can make a PC to become slow. But the worst is still the danger that old software no longer being updated and patched, a computer exposed. G Data provides tips for a successful year for cleaning and thus a safer computer.
Over time, almost everyone collects old data and software on his computer. This slows down the PC, takes space, causing a security risk that should not be underestimated. "Every regular computer user would have to clean up," advises Eddy Willems, Security Evangelist at G Data. "Outdated software is a major risk for the PC. Think of old operating systems and programs where no patches to be made by the manufacturer. This situation ensures that leaks in the system that are not filled. Cybercriminals know these vulnerabilities and go for it on. Users are advised to make their system truly up-to-date and updates and patches to download and install. Programs that no more updates to be made, should be replaced by newer alternatives

Tips for a good spring cleaning of the computer

  • Keep the operating system and installed software are completely up to date, always the latest service packs, patches and updates download and install. Programs provided by the manufacturer no longer updated, must be completely removed and replaced with a newer version.
  • Regular cleaning is needed not only at home, it also applies to data. Copies of old versions of data and documents that are no longer used on the hard drive would be removed. In case of doubt, even old data on an external hard drive, USB stick or CD-ROM are stored. Free programs like CloneSpy or anti identical twin trace files, which run more than one chain on the system. Always delete files carefully using a digital shredder. Such a 'shredder' can in many security software packages are found.
  • Periodically remove the temporary files (temporary files) that can be been found in the "Temp" folder in the Windows directory. These are auto-generated data while online. Deleting these files allows the computer to significantly faster.
  • Browser cookies, browser history files and automatically fill in Web forms after each browsing session would be removed. These files store traffic patterns, take up space on your PC and offer little benefit to the user. There is within the browser settings usually a setting available which is automatic. There are also browsers that offer a private mode where most temporary files are automatically deleted after surfing.
  • Do not use the option "Remember password" in the browser and remove the passwords already stored in this way, so cyber criminals can not easily read this data. The passwords are stored to find and delete the browser settings.
  • Use a robust security solution and keep it up to date by the updates always download and install. A security solution that provides system-tuning, gives the best results in terms of speed and stability of your computer.
  • Surf only one active firewall, which is always up to date held.
  • Backing up saves all critical data in case the computer crashes. A system image backs up the entire drive, including all installed programs. Many security suites offer the ability to back up files.
  •  Surf only with limited user rights. And user rights can be easily adjusted via the control panel. About Windows (again) in-house shows, direct good profiles set up during the installation process.
